drainpipes

they cling to houses' sides

like ivy nipples climbing walls

black or white-glistening geckos

suction-cupping a sheer surface

spreading four six eight legs

immovable frozen into place

like a fern frond beaten flat glued to a piece of cardboard

until the rain starts or someone flushes the loo...

then they sound like the ocean in a bucket
